UK scientists gain licence to edit genes in human embryos

Scientists in London have been granted permission to edit the genomes of human embryos for research, UK fertility regulators announced. The 1 February approval by the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) represents the world’s first endorsement of such research by a national regulatory authority.

Genome editing, or genome editing with engineered nucleases (GEEN) is a type of genetic engineering in which DNA is inserted, deleted or replaced in the genome of an organism using engineered nucleases, or “molecular scissors.

A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. Each genomecontains all of the information needed to build and maintain that organism. In humans, a copy of the entire genome—more than 3 billion DNA base pairs—is contained in all cells that have a nucleus.

A  Genes, which is made up of DNA, is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity and  act as instructions to make molecules called proteins.

Embryos organism in the earliest stage of development. In humans this is defined as the developing organism from the fourthday after fertilization to the end of the eighth week. After that the unborn baby is usually referred to as the fetus.
