Asteroid Day: Origin Background Significance
Asteroid Day as observed annually on 30 June is the United Nations sanctioned day of public awareness of the risks of asteroid impacts. to educate the public about the importance of asteroids –their role in the formation of our solar system, their impact in space resources and the importance of defending our planet from future impacts. Asteroid Day annually observes 30 June to mark the date of Earth’s largest asteroid impact in recorded history, the Siberia Tunguska event.”
An asteroid is a rocky object that orbits the Sun. Asteroids are smaller than a planet, but they are larger than the pebble-size objects we call meteoroids.
Comets orbit the Sun as small icy dirtballs, whereas asteroids consist of rock.
A meteor is a space rock—or meteoroid—that enters Earth’s atmosphere, as it – burns up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, it creating a streak of light in the sky (often called “shooting stars”). When Earth encounters many meteoroids at once, we call it a meteor shower. If a meteoroid survives its trip through Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the Earth’s surface, it is called a meteorite

Asteroid and Comets
Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Remnants from the giant cloud of gas and dust that condensed to create the sun, planets, and moons some 4.5 billion years ago include asteroids and comets.
Today, most asteroids orbit the sun in a tightly packed belt located between Mars and Jupiter. Comets tend to have more chemical compounds that vaporize when heated, such as water, and more elliptical (egg-shaped) orbits than asteroids do.
We call Galaxies sprawling systems of dust, gas, and dark matter. a million to a trillion stars that are held together by gravity. Nearly all large galaxies are thought to also contain supermassive black holes at their centers. In our own galaxy, the Milky Way, the sun is just one of about 100 to 400 billion stars that spin.
The order of the planets in the solar system, starting nearest the sun and working outward is the following: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
They often call the inner four planets closest to the sun — Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars — the “terrestrial planets.”
Our solar system
It consists of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity. The planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, dwarf planets such as Pluto, dozens of moons and millions of asteroids, comets and meteoroids. Beyond our own solar system, we have discovered thousands of planetary systems orbiting other stars in the Milky Way. Closest star of solar system is Proxima Centauri.
It mainly contains hydrogen and helium. Nuclear Fusion in the core of the Sun is source of all its energy. The photosphere is the glowing surface of the sun. it is red coloured Chromosphere and beyond it is Corona(Visible during eclipses. We call the bright regions on the surface of the Sun plages.
Mercury: It is the nearest to the Sun and also the smallest planet in our solar system.
We call Venus morning or evening star, it is not a star. Also called Earth’s twin. Venus has no moon or satellite of its own.
Life only exists on Earth in the solar system. The moon is earths natural satellite and we call it the Blue Planet
The axis of rotation of the Earth is 23.5 degrees relative to the orbital plane- the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun. The tilt is responsible for the change of seasons on the Earth. The Earth takes 24 hours to complete a rotation. The Earth has only one moon.
Mars: It appears slightly reddish and, therefore, also called the red planet. Mars has two small natural satellites. Phobos and Deimos
Jupiter is the largest planet of the solar system. Ganymede is the biggest satellite others are Europa and Callisto.
Saturn: It has an icy ring around it. It has max.no. of satellites. Largest moon is Titan.
Uranus also rotates from east to west (like Venus) also known as green planet.
The Neptune the eighth and most distant planet in our solar system. It is dark, cold and has a presence of supersonic winds. Triton is its largest moon.
