A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan, triggering tsunami alerts. A Tsunami Advisory has been issued for the coastal regions of Japan. The island nation of Japan lies along the western edge of the Ring of Fire and is one of the most tectonically active places on Earth.

The Ring of Fire, also referred to as the Circum-Pacific Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. The majority of Earth’s volcanoes and earthquakes take place along the Ring of Fire.
