In July 1943, he arrived in Singapore from Germany. In Singapore he took over the reins of the Indian Independence Movement in East Asia from Rash Behari Bose and organised the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) comprising mainly of Indian prisoners of war.

PM Modi had last year also renamed three islands of Andaman and Nicobar to mark the 75th anniversary of the raising of the Indian national flag by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as he is popularly known. Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island were renamed by the PM as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

The prime minister  virtually inaugurated a model of a proposed memorial dedicated to Bose in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and named 21 islands after Param Vir Chakra awardees. The memorial will be set up on Ross Island, which was renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep in 2018.
