Unusual Air Quality in India Linked to Rare ‘Triple-Dip’ La Nina Event
A unique triple-dip La-Nina event– the three consecutive years of La Niña conditions- made worse by climate change, led to an unusual pattern during the winter season of 2022-23. A recent study, in the Elsevier Journal, revealed that air quality got better in northern India, but pollution levels increased in peninsular India during this time.
This event, affected by climate change, affected the big wind patterns, which helped keep the air moving in North Indian cities. This movement prevented the air from getting stale, which helped improve air quality there. On the other hand, it made things calmer in cities in southern India. This calmness sped up the spread of pollution from one place to another, making the air quality there a lot worse.
