The sitars and tanpuras of Miraj awarded Geographical Indication
Coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tags have been awarded to sitars and tanpuras of Miraj. The town is in Maharashtra’s Sangli district is famous for its craftsmanship in making musical instruments and the tradition of making these instruments dates back to 300 years.
Last week also the government granted GI Tag to over 60 products.
The GI of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 is the main law in India that oversees the registration and protection of geographical indications
The duration of protection is initially 10 years but can be renewed indefinitely.
The GI Registry is located in Chennai that processes and registers GI Applications. The tag was first given to Darjeeling Tea.
