2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 awarded with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction”.

Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have successfully utilized artificial intelligence to predict the structure of almost all known proteins. David Baker has learned how to master life’s building blocks and create entirely new proteins.

Chemistry Laureates

  • The most common research field for Nobel Laureates in chemistry is   biochemistry. It is the field for 50 Nobel Laureates.
  • Frederick Sanger awarded twice.
  • The Curies were the most successful “Nobel Prize family”. The husband-and-wife partnership of Marie Curie and Pierre Curie awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. Marie Curie herself awarded the Nobel Prize a second time, receiving the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Marie and Pierre Curie’s eldest daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with her husband, Frédéric Joliot. The younger daughter, Ève Curie, worked for the UNICEF and married to Henry R. Labouisse. He accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of UNICEF in 1965.

Alfred Nobel

                (1833-1896), the inventor of dynamite and holder of 355 patents, established the Nobel Prizes “for the Greatest Benefit to Mankind”. The foundations for the prize laid in 1895 when Alfred Nobel wrote his last will, leaving much of his wealth to the establishment of the Nobel Prize.

The first Nobel Prizes awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been honoring men and women from all corners of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and for work in peace. In 1969,  another prize added “The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel”. The Prize includes a Nobel diploma, a medal, and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize. All Nobel Prizes awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in Oslo, Norway. Norway and Sweden situated in Scandinavia, northern Europe. Oslo is the capital of Norway and Stockholm is the capital of Sweden.
