SHAHEED UDHAM SINGH: BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
Shaheed Udham Singh, a revolutionary nationalist, was born on 26 December 1899, at Sunam, in the then princely state of Patiala.
Born as Sher Singh, the brave Indian revolutionary remembered for assassinating Sir Michael O’Dwyer, in order to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. He sentenced to death and hanged for the murder on July 31, 1940.
The heinous act of killing around 1000 non-violent protesters and pilgrims and injuring another 1000 who had assembled in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab for Baisakhi celebrations on the command of Reginald Edward Harry Dyer.He was infamous for commanding the soldiers that opened fire on thousands of unarmed protesters at Amritsar in the Punjab on 13 April 1919.
This coward, spineless and profoundly inhumane act by the British enraged the entire nation, and Udham Singh was not the one to keep quiet about it. Shaheed Udham Singh targeted Michael O’Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab from 1912 to 1919, who supported General Dyer and called the massacre a “correct” action.
Also referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh.An Indian revolutionary freedom fighter who sought revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He used the name ‘Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’ while in British custody.He was an active member of the Ghadar Party. Also of Hindustan Socialist Republic Association (HSRA). Hw was born as Sher Singh on December 26, 1899, in Sunam, Sangrur district.He was found guilty and hanged on July 31, 1940, in a London prison.
