Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed ten years

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed ten years of its implementation. The scheme was launched in 2014.

  • Total 53.13 crore Jan Dhan accounts
  • Out of total 30 crore are women’s accounts.
  • PMJDY also helps in terms of financial inclusion. Over 36.13 crores of RuPay debit cards. There is no cost to Jan Dhan account holders.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is the National Mission for Financial Inclusion. It ensures access to financial services, namely, Banking/Savings & Deposit Accounts, Remittance, Credit, Insurance, and Pension in an affordable manner. The scheme ensures inclusion of excluded sections i.e. weaker sections & low-income groups. The plan envisages universal access to banking facilities with at least one basic banking account for every household.

The scheme aims to push the Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) scheme of the Union Government. It plans to channel all Government benefits (from Centre / State / Local Body) to the beneficiary’s accounts. There is no requirement to maintain any minimum balance in PMJDY accounts. An overdraft (OD) facility up to Rs. 10,000 to eligible account holders is available.
