JUSTICE R M LODHA SWORN IN AS THE 41ST CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA
Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha was on Sunday sworn in as the 41st Chief Justice of India. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukharjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Chief Justice Lodha succeeds Chief Justice P. Sathasivam who demitted office on completion of his term on Saturday.
CONTEXT:
As per the memorandum of procedure which governs the appointment of members of the higher judiciary, appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the most senior judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office of CJI. Mr. Justice Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first chief justice of Supreme Court.
