Revised Dietary Guidelines for Indians: Processed foods; Sugar intake
National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad-based, which is part of the Indian Council of Medical Research, released a revised Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs).
- The guidelines have called for avoiding protein supplements for building body mass;
- It advocated restricted intake of salt and sugar;
- DGI advised restricted use of ultra-processed foods;
- Guidelines directed food labels to make informed and healthy food choices.
- The guidelines mentioned essential nutrients that is required to meet and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
- The NIN mentioned prolonged intake of large amounts of protein powders or consumption of high protein concentrate and its associated with dangers such as bone mineral loss and kidney damage.
- For sugar consumption the guidelines mention less than 5 percent of total energy intake, and a balanced diet should provide not more than 45 percent calories from cereals and millet
- Citing reasons for poor intake of essential macronutrients and micronutrients, the guidelines reveals significant proportion of the Indian population relies heavily on cereals.
