Supreme Court holds electoral bond scheme unconstitutional

A five-judge bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud holds electoral bonds scheme for political funding is “unconstitutional” as violates the Right to Information under Article 19(1)(a). The Supreme Court here applied to a three-pronged test outlined in the 2017 Puttaswamy ruling that upheld privacy as a fundamental right. The electoral Bond scheme allowed for anonymous funding to political parties. Voter’s right is breached by the anonymous clause and information on political funding to political parties is essential said the ruling.
